Born in North Carolina, John Coltrane moved to Philadelphia after graduating high school to begin his musical studies, where he worked in early bebop and complex bop forms of Jazz. He would become one of the most influential and inventive band leaders, saxophonists, and composers of Jazz music. His legacy remains an enduring influence on many musical forms to this day. Coltrane was one of the first Jazz musicians to employ modes in his compositions. He became a prominent leader of the free jazz genre that would transform America both musically and culturally during the years before World War II and the post-war era, where his career flourished.
Pictured here in 1960 at the height of his creative output and only seven years before his death, this photograph of Coltrane is one of the most iconic images of the Jazz great and captures his spirit. By 1960, Coltrane's influence and legacy had allowed him to reach larger audiences, and the following year, he would produce some of the most recognizable recordings of the entire genre. Coltrane's work would also help break down racial segregation during the 1950s and 1960s as nightclubs became integrated spaces for innovative thought.
This iconic photograph immediately transports the viewer back in time with its distinctive aesthetic and classic style. Coltrane's legacy cannot be underestimated, and his work remains some of the most revered music of any genre, as well as a tribute to his reputation and dedication to his craft.
