Vintage Hopi 15" HEHEYA Kachina Doll Katsina Carved by Ramson Honanhie c1950s
For your consideration is this fantastic vintage 1950s hand carved kachina doll by Hopi artisan Ramson Honanhie.
This is called the Heheya
Amutaka Katsina Doll, which doesn't have an English translation. It was
hand carved by Hopi carver Ramson Honanhie in the mid 1950s. It
is a fabulous katsina with his fur robe, leather belt with tack conchos
and shells hanging from the side. He is also wearing a wonderful red
and silver bead necklace with a shell pendant. He has chilis atop his
fur headdress and he carries a watermelon. His breechcloth is painted
fabric, as are the ties at his knees. There is also a very old tag that
describes the kachina.
This sensational vintage kachina measures approx 15" tall. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
* This Heheya Aumutake is
from Third Mesa. Hehey'a Katsinam act as messengers to the rain gods as
a type of farmer katsina. The Hehey'as dance on the side of the
procession and guard the other dancers. The Hehey'a talks in
opposites...for instance, if the dance is good, he says it is bad. The
Hehey'a is a relative of the Ogre family and appears at Powamuya. *
