There have been major championships and changes in ownership, along with comebacks, setbacks, mothballing, bankrolling, shutdowns and other showdowns. Love it or hate it, it’s the brand that simply refuses to die. The very first Hogan Edge iron was introduced in the late 80’s and became one of the most successful game-improvement irons in history. It was the first Hogan iron to feature perimeter weighting for extra forgiveness, along with the classic Hogan forged feel. As a former owner of the Hogan brand, Callaway still has rights to Hogan’s other iconic name – Apex. White says that even thought Callaway did come out with irons named Edge a few years ago (and still sells them in a boxed-set to Costco), Hogan’s lawyers have done their homework on the Edge name. “Nobody owns the name ‘Edge’ outright. It’s too generic. Our trademark is for ‘Ben Hogan Edge,'” Picked by Golf WRX as one of the best Hogan clubs of all time. For Hogan iron purists, the Edge might seem like an odd club to find on this list, but let me assure you it holds an important place in the history of the company. Up until the release of the first Edge iron, Hogan irons were strictly forged blades. The Hogan Edge was the very first full production forged cavity back iron from a major manufacturer. They were produced by Cornell Forge in Chicago, and pictures of their production process were prominently displayed when entering their facility. “Full production” is the key phrase there because Ping’s first iron the Ballnamic 69 were made from forged Golf Craft blank heads and milled out to create perimeter weighting. Ping irons actually played a big role in the development of the Hogan Edge, since it was only a few years prior in 1982 that Ping released the Ping Eye 2 iron with its perimeter weighting. These new forgiving cavity back clubs were sweeping the world of golf. Everyone from professionals to amateurs starting adapting more forgiving cavity back irons and Hogan needed to fight back. They did just that with the Edge, and if you look closely at the design with the more swept toe and offset, you can see Karsten Solheim’s Eye 2 had a big influence on the Edge. The Hogan Edge Forged irons are the perfect mix of playability and forgiveness for a low to mid-handicap player. They are cavity back with little offset, only a modest mid-size head, so they are easy to hit and do not overly punish mis-hits. The feel is great like other forged irons on solid strikes, yet do not feel too harsh when I miss the sweet spot - which happens more than I like to admit. I have kept these irons, my Ping Eye2+, and the Callaway x20, and have gotten rid of all the older stuff as well as all the newer clubs I have had over the last many years.
