Item description

Realizing that the history of the period from 1750 to 1790 had never been adequately written, Stroup Bell conducted a thorough search of all the records at Carlisle, Harrisburg, and Washington. The assessment, land, and pension records were found to be especially valuable. The authors made a search of the tax lists from 1767 until 1789 (preserved at Carlisle), when Mifflin County was formed and gleaned many interesting facts. Particular attention was paid to separating the unseated from the seated lands, so that a correct list of actual inhabitants could be obtained. The authors believed that the many interesting facts they learned of the genesis of the county should be shared, these facts are herewith presented with the hope that they will enlighten, inspire and entertain others as they have the authors.
