Luffa, a.k.a. loofa or loofah, refers the species of gourd: L. cyclindrica (the smooth luffa, Egyptian luffa, vegetable sponge, dishrag gourd, sponge gourd, or gourd loofa). Smooth loofa has a circular profile, with shallow creases running the length of the fruit. It is avigorous annual vine with showy yellow flowers. Luffas belong to the Cucurbitaceae or gourd family. In fact, when the luffa is less than 7 inches long, it is actually edible if you slice it up in salads or cook it like squash or okra. After that the flesh become fibrous and inedible. Germination: Soak the seeds in a wet paper towel (not soggy) and keep in a closed zip lock bag. Keep the bag in indirect sunlight (near windows) or top of the fridge (warmer place). Plant the sprout seed in a well drained moist soil. In colder region plant inside at least 2 to 3 weeks before early spring and plant out side when weather warms up. The plant prefers well-drained, moist, rich soil. It requires plenty of moisture in the growing season and a warm, sunny position, sheltered from the wind. It can be cultivated in small places such as in a pot, and allowed to spread on a trellis. These vining plants produce beautiful foliage, yellow flowers, and robust loofah gourds.
