From June 7 to 10, 1987, an international annual convention (Rotary International World Convention) will take place in Munich in Munich. On February 23, 1905, American lawyer Paul Harris founded the first Rotary club in Chicago. One met alternately weekly once to the common food and conversations in the office of a friend. Rotating remained as a source of growing personal experience and friendship among each other and gave the movement, which originated with this small beginning, the generally binding name "Rotary". The first six Rotarians in the world were in the middle of working life. In the face of corrupt business behavior, social maladministration, and environmental abuses in the unorganized city of Chicago, she made rigorous demands for herself and others that culminate in the realization of absolute professional fairness. The goal of Rotary, which spread beyond the borders of the USA since 1910 and formed its own international organization with a central committee in Evanston / USA, is service readiness in the daily life. Rotary, as a worldwide association of working men, seeks to accomplish this goal in the following ways: 1. By cultivating friendship as an opportunity to prove useful to others; 2. by recognizing high ethical standards in private and professional life and the value of each useful to the community 3. by promoting the responsible private, professional and public activities of all Rotarians, 4. by cultivating the good will for understanding and peace among peoples through a world community of working men, united in the ideal of service. Rotary International today has over 22,000 clubs in 160 countries and territories, and has over one million members. In the Federal Republic of Germany there are 520 clubs with an average number of 50 members each. In addition to the social, cultural and scientific activities of the clubs, which annually attract around two million DM in West Germany, Rotary International is now launching the »Polio Plus Program«, which will provide $ 120 million in the world within three years Vaccinations against polio, tetanus, whooping cough, measles, tuberculosis and diphtheria can be applied. The starting signal will be given at the World Convention in Munich. An Annual Congress of Rotary International takes place annually once in 1987, for the first time on German soil. 25,000 participants are expected at the convention in Munich. The present president of Rotary International, M.A.T. Caparas (Philippines), - the presidents change annually - presides. His motto for his term of office is: "Rotary brings hope" will be discussed in Munich with regard to all aspects of Rotary service. (Text: Dr. Heinz Wolff, Wuppertal, Pastgovernor 181st District, Rotary International)
