TOP OF THE WEEK:
GATEFOLD COVER: SIZING UP PRESIDENT FORD: The Oval Office is his room now; the question troubling his countrymen is
whether he can fill it. After his first 100 days as President, Gerald R. Ford has won the affection but not the respect of
the nation -- and in his crisis of faith the problems he faces may be insurmountable. "He's been run over by history," says a
sympathetic Democrat. To size up the new President, Newsweek Editor Osborn Elliott, Managing Editor Edward Kosner
and Washington bureau chief Mel Elfin sat down with him for an hour-long interview. The Gallup Organization conducted a
searching special poll on what Americans think of Ford, and Newsweek bureaus around the United States and the world
assayed the President's impact. Senior Editor Peter Goldman wrote the cover story.
THE CAP ON THE BOTTLE: Congress seemed more impressed with Gerald Ford's style as a roving ambassador than with the
strategic arms deal he struck with Leonid Brezhnev. They agreed, it is now clear, only to set limits for the arms race --
not to halt it.
THE TINIEST HOBBY: Dripping glue turns into shiny icicles on dollhouse roofs and remnants of worn gloves end up as leather
sofas for America's hottest new hobbyists -- the miniature collectors. Linda Francke assesses the fad.
THE BEST?: The best actress in American films may very well be GENA ROWLANDS, star of John Cassavetes' powerful "A Woman
Under the Influence." Paul D. Zimmerman reviews the film and interviews Rowlands.
THERE'S GOOD NUDES: Looking through the new art books of the season, Douglas Davis finds there's good nudes. The truth
about the naked truth appears as a prominent theme in some of the year's most important and fascinating volumes.
