Item description

President John F. Kennedy is pictured here pursuing one of his most beloved hobbies and sports: golf. Kennedy played on the Harvard Golf Team and was well known for his skill in the game and advocacy for speeding up play and rule changes to help modernize the sport. This image captures him mid-swing, near the compound his family established in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, on the shores of the Nantucket Sound on Cape Cod. This photo was taken in the same year as Kennedy's assassination in 1963 and remains an enduring tribute to his legacy and the marks his presidency would make on American culture for the following decades. Kennedy graduated from Harvard University in 1940 and would go on to enlist in the United States Naval Reserve, where he would later command a series of PT boats in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He survived the sinking of PT-109 and would receive the Naval and Marine Corps Medal, though he sustained injuries that would cause him numerous health issues for the remainder of his life. Kennedy would then serve in the US Congress from 1947 to 1953, followed by his term in the US Senate from 1953 to 1960. In a historic turn of events, Kennedy's charisma and leadership propelled him to victory in the 1960 presidential election, making him the first Catholic President of the United States. His tenure as Commander-in-Chief was marked by formidable challenges, including the heightening tensions of the Cold War with the Soviet Union and Cuba. Notably, his administration navigated critical episodes such as the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the escalating involvement in Vietnam that ultimately led to war. Through triumphs and tribulations, President John F. Kennedy left an indelible imprint on American history and the world stage.
