Located on the easternmost point of Nantucket, the Sankaty Head lighthouse was built in 1950 and remains one of the most iconic lighthouses in the region and an enduring part of the sailing and boating legacy attached to the Massachusetts island. The light was fully automated in 1950 and is still in service, providing boaters off the coast of Nantucket the ability to navigate the waters while avoiding shallow shoals that caused numerous accidents during the early portions of the nineteenth century. The lighthouse was officially recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and moved from its original location due to erosion of the bluff on which it was situated.
This photograph features the lighthouse as well as the keeper's house next to it in an iconic image that presents this national treasure in a nostalgic light. Nantucket was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1966 and is considered a prime example of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century architecture and the characteristics of a New England seaport town. During those times, the island was a vibrant hub for whaling and is the initial setting for "Moby Dick," which remains a classic tale of the time to this day.
The lighthouses of New England attract tourists each year and create an indelible bond to the past that is unlike other architectural features or natural areas. This is an authentic piece of American history that immediately transports the viewer back in time while illustrating Nantucket's distinct heritage.
