A martyr of the 1950s Civil Rights movement, Emmett Till's legacy remains an enduring part of American history and Black Americans' struggle for equal rights following decades of prejudicial laws in the American South following the conclusion of the American Civil War. On August 28, 1955, Till was lynched by a white mob at the age of fourteen after being accused of offending a woman at a local grocery store in Drew, Mississippi. Till was born in Chicago, and his body was returned for his funeral, which was attended by tens of thousands and highlighted the rampant racism found in towns and cities across the South.
Till's murder sparked a new energy in the Civil Rights Movement. InDecember 1955, the Montgomery bus boycott began and would last for over a year in what would become one the most recognized forms of peaceful protest led by Civil Rights leaders, including the iconic Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who would become the face of the movement for the next decade. The boycott would lead to a Supreme Court trial where segregation on buses was ruled unconstitutional, a significant win for the Civil Rights movement and a catalyst for numerous other critical developments over the next decade.
This photograph remains an enduring image of Till with his mother and a reminder of Black Americans' struggle in their fight for equal rights. This picture immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a memorable and powerful bond between the past and present.
