Born in Guanajuato, Mexico, Diego Rivera would go on to international acclaim for his large paintings, including his murals and frescoes, which would become some of the most influential Mexican art of the twentieth century and earn him considerable acclaim while cementing his legacy for decades to come. In 1929, Rivera married fellow Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, whose work would also go on to become some of the most renowned Mexican contemporary art of the era. Rivera began drawing on his family's home walls at the age of three, only one year after his twin brother's death, and his parents installed chalkboards and cloth to encourage his creativity and foster a sense of freedom.
Rivera moved to Paris in the early nineteen hundreds and married his first wife, pre-soviet painter Angelina Beloff. After separating from Beloff, Rivera married again in 1922 to Guadalupe Marin upon his return to his native Mexico, where he became active in communist politics, which would lead to his encounters with Kahlo, who would become his third wife. Rivera worked in Cubism and Post-Impressionism, and his artistic style became highly recognizable throughout the twentieth century in Europe and North America.
This iconic photograph captures Rivera observing Kahlo while she paints one of her signature self-portraits in their home, Casa Azul. This remains an enduring image that captures the bond between the duo, which was at times tumultuous. During this period, the couple was highly prolific, and this is truly an authentic piece of photographic history.
