New Orleans was the third largest city in the American South until World War II and bears one of the most distinct cultures, and was established as a French colony in 1718. The distinctive blend of indigenous and French-Canadian residents created one of the most unique heritages of any American city, and New Orleans remains one of the most iconic places in the United States as well as an important port at the delta of the Mississippi River.
