This image of the iconic natural feature found on Cannon Mountain in Franconia, NH, captures the majesty and spiritual connection of the Old Man of the Mountain. First surveyed in 1805 by Luke Brooks and Francis Whitcomb, the five granite ledges held considerable cultural value for the Abenaki and Mohawk Tribes. Created over thousands of years by glacial freezing and thawing, the Old Man of the Mountain collapsed in 2003. Residents discussed installing a replica, but the project was ultimately halted. The site sits some 1200 feet above Profile Lake, and the features were also called The Great Stone Face or, simply, the Profile.
New Hampshire native Daniel Webster served in the U.S. Congress, representing his home state, and his work helped bring the Old Man of the Mountain to prominence. Later he would pen the iconic words regarding the distinctive structure "Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoemakers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men."
The Old Man of the Mountain also holds special significance in the traditions of the Indigenous legends of the area. When the structure collapsed in 2003, the Abenaki Tribe believed it was the completion and rejoining of the spirit to the Great Circle. This dry plate print is a piece of cultural history with a distinctive aesthetic and style.
