Item description

STORMY VICTORY: The Story of Tchaikovsky by Claire Lee Purdy With striking wood-block illustrations by Vera Bock With musical drawings by Rudolf W. Kohl New York: Julian Messner, Inc., (1942). First edition, first printing Warmly inscribed to a music student (Patricia King--whose signed bookplate is to the front endpaper) and SIGNED and dated 1943 by the author to the verso of the frontispiece. Additionally SIGNED by the music drawing artist Rudolf W. Kohl to the title page "Compliments of Rudy Kohl". 47 musical pieces and songs in the text by Kohl. The fascinatingly told story of the most Russian of composers, who lived through wars, revolutions, and who rose up through a difficult Slav village life to bring ancient cultures, rhythms, folk and children's songs, and old harmonies, to the West. He became a great composer of classical music and operas. Former owner's (the inscribee's) scenic bookplate to the front end-paper, else near fine in beige linen with brown embossed titles to the front cover and to the spine; in a slightly shelf-edge-worn, very good dust jacket with some rub-wear to the spine folds and flap folds, with very short shelf-edge tears, and some small chips and nicks to the upper shelf edge; original $2.50 price still intact to the front inner flap. Octavo; 248 pages; acknowledgements; Tchaikovsky's works; general index; and music index. A lovely vintage music biography, SIGNED by TWO contributors.
