The new year is here, like a bright coin just minted and waiting to be spent. For you and for us, it will be filled with fun. and work-with time out for relaxation. Our job is to make your relaxing fun; your job is to enjoy it. So let's see what's waiting in the first BL of 1968 . . . Topping the list is a trip to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. Entitled Eagles of the Sea, it focuses on three days in the life of four midshipmen (all former Eagle Scouts) as reported by Ernest Doclar, a staffer and commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve ... Then It's off with author Martin Luray to Austria, where skiing is a way of health, and maybe wealth and fame, for boys who can SSSCCCHHHUUUSSSSSS! better than anyone else.. . Writing abouta fascinating yearlong hobby for you in 1968, and '69, and for years to come is worldesteemed photographer Philippe Halsman. His subject is Howto Clickwith YourCamera, and his ideas are as fine as his photos ... In the fiction department, author Allen Childs swings again with his keen, cool and kooky teen musicians. This time The Six Transistors Rig a Dummy Band-a wild bit with the group go-go-going till they're gone-completely ... Author Dale Colombo returns with another adventure of his 21st-century space Scouts. This first of a two-part pulse-pounder finds the crew of the spaceship Magellan hit by sabotage, rebellion, and the kidnaping of a space-terrified Scout who is flung from a ship with orders to board the eerie Derelict Spaceship-or drift out there forever ... Now, let's meet:
ERNEST DOCLAR: BL's Regular Features Editor joined Boy Scouting at 12 and has stayed with the movement ever since, including Scoutmaster work in Japan while serving four years with the U.S. Navy. In the four years he's been a BL staffer, Ernie has written on Scouting around the nation, working in assignments between his editing of the regular features, Scoutcraft and the cartoon features.
AL STENZEL: Al has been BL's Mr. Cartoon Section since 1952, when it first got under way, and what he doesn't draw himself is drawn by artists on his staff. A well-traveled fellow, he was born in Boston, Mass., moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., then to Callfornia - and logged a good many knots with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Nowadays he's content to "travel" In books.
