Additional Information The Korean Peninsula was divided into North and South Korea in 1945 with the Soviets backing the North, while the United States would run a trustee administration South of the 38th Parallel. This agreement was reached following the surrender of Japan after the conclusion of World War II. In 1950, a Soviet-backed attempt to invade South Korea sparked the Korean War, which would lead to nearly three decades of conflict in Southeast Asia, including the French Indo-China War, which would evolve into the Vietnam War. The Korean War ended in 1953 though no formal peace treaty was signed. This Central Intelligence Agency map bears a signature style that has been employed since they began producing geopolitical maps in 1941.
