Additional Information This photograph of Bobby Kennedy shows the American politician in a period of significant prominence and influence as he speaks out for equal rights for Black Americans outside of the Justice Department in 1963. Kennedy had risen to the rank of Attorney General by 1963 and remains an iconic figure within the Democratic party and is considered to be one of the most progressive politicians during an era of considerable turmoil both at home and abroad as the Vietnam War began and the Civil Rights Movement gained steam across the United States following events like Medgar Evers assassination. Kennedy was born into a political dynasty that included the 35th President of The United States, John F. Kennedy, who remains an iconic figure. JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas in 1963, an event that would shape the following decades both politically and culturally and mark a turning point in America. Robert Kennedy would continue to gain popularity until his assassination in 1968. Bobby Kennedy served in the US Naval Reserves from 1944 to 1946, taking a brief hiatus from his studies at Harvard University. Kennedy's political career began as a lawyer at the Justice Department until he resigned to help his brother successfully campaign for President in 1960. Kennedy's political legacy centers around his advocacy for Civil Rights, going after organized crime, and his involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis. This photograph captures Kennedy's passion as a voice for equality and his commitment to advocating for Black Rights while protesting in DC.
