Item description
? How to Grow Coleus Black Dragon (Indoor/Outdoor – Annual/Perennial)
Coleus Black Dragon is a stunning ornamental plant known for its dark purple-red foliage. It can be grown indoors or outdoors, depending on your climate. In warm or tropical areas, it's grown as a perennial, while in colder regions it's treated as an annual.
1. Seed Preparation
Use fresh, high-quality Coleus Black Dragon seeds.
Soaking is optional but can speed up germination (soak for 1–2 hours in warm water if desired).
2. Soil Mix
Use a light, well-draining potting mix such as:
50% garden soil
30% compost or organic fertilizer
20% rice husk charcoal, cocopeat, or fine sand
Tip: You can also use ready-to-use seed-starting mix.
3. Sowing Seeds
Sprinkle seeds on the surface of the soil. Do not bury them, as they need light to germinate.
Lightly press the seeds into the soil using your fingers.
Mist gently with a spray bottle.
Cover with clear plastic to maintain humidity (like a mini greenhouse).
Place in a warm, bright area with indirect sunlight (ideal temperature: 21–24C / 70–75F).
4. Germination Time
Seeds will germinate in 5 to 14 days.
Once seedlings have 2–4 true leaves, transplant them into small pots or containers.
5. Indoor vs Outdoor Placement
Indoor: Place near a bright window, avoiding harsh direct sunlight.
Outdoor: Partial shade is best—morning sunlight is okay, but avoid strong afternoon sun.
Keep soil moist, especially during hot or dry weather.
6. Watering
Water when the topsoil starts to feel dry.
Keep soil consistently moist, but not soggy or waterlogged.
7. Care Tips
Feed every 2 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10).
Pinch off growing tips regularly to encourage bushier growth.
Remove flower spikes to keep foliage lush (flowering can reduce leaf size and color intensity).
8. Annual vs Perennial
In warm climates (like Southeast Asia): Coleus can be a perennial, growing year-round.
In cooler or temperate zones: Grow as an annual or bring it indoors during winter.
