Item description
Taken by the so-called "father of foreign photographic news," George Grantham Bain, this picture of Duke Kahanamoku captures the iconic Hawaiian ambassador of surfing and swimming in a unique moment of formality. Most depictions of Duke illustrate him in his element, either swimming or standing in front of his classic wooden surfboard. Kahanamoku brought the Sport of Kings, surfing, around the globe as he traveled for competition in the Olympics. He won gold in swimming in 1912 and 1920 and earned a silver medal in his final Olympic appearance in 1924. His influence and legacy are memorialized with statues across the globe.
Bain was one of the most prolific photographers and has a dedicated collection in the Library of Congress which contains 40,000 negatives and 50,000 photographs from his career, with the oldest dating to the 1860s and as recently as the 1930s. His photographs illustrate the significant cultural changes that occurred during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This vintage photo of Kahanamoku illustrates his dynamic character.
In 1925 Duke lived in Newport Beach, CA, and worked as a lifeguard where he heroically saved eight sailors from a capsized ship with his surfboard, a revolutionary act that would make a paddle board an essential piece of equipment for lifeguards across the globe. This vintage photograph is truly a piece of American and Hawaiian history that depicts Duke during his early years of success.
