Item description
OUR NATIONAL CALAMITY
OF FIRE, FLOOD AND TORNADO
Written by Logan Marshall
Published by L.T. Myers, 1913
Condition: Good+
Natural disasters often dominate the news these days, but a century ago it may have been much the same. This book, published in 1913, chronicles a series of then-recent "weather calamities" which had been plaguing the east and midwest of the U.S. Most fully covered were floods in Ohio and adjacent states and tornadoes in Nebraska and Indiana. Here is just one short paragraph regarding the flooding in Dayton, Ohio: "Orville Wright, the aeroplane builder, and his family, who had been marooned in the west side, reported to relief headquarters on Monday. The flood stopped just short of wiping out of existence the priceless models, records, plans and drawings -- all in the original -- of the Wright brothers, who gave the airship to the world." Many photo plates and other illustrations throughout the book. There is moisture spotting (or is it just rubbing?) around the edges of the covers; some spine fading; other exterior wear is modest. The binding is a bit shaken, but still secure. There is foxing on many pages, but the interior appears unmarked and essentially uncreased. No dust jacket. Not a bad copy for a title that generally hasn't worn well..
