Additional Information
One of the most iconic destinations in the American West, Big Bear Lake and its historic dam remain a popular tourist attraction in California, thanks to their proximity to the Los Angeles Metropolitan area and the wide array of outdoor activities available. In the summer months, visitors enjoy fishing, boating, and water sports, while the winter season draws tourists for skiing and snowboarding at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain.
The region's rich history took a pivotal turn in 1859 when prospector William F. Holcomb, who had migrated from Indiana to Los Angeles, heard rumors of mineral deposits in the area. Holcomb's discovery of gold sparked an early Gold Rush, attracting thousands of prospectors to the region and transforming California's economy and culture for decades.
The original Big Bear Dam was constructed in 1884 to create a reservoir for irrigating the Redlands area, but it failed to provide sufficient water levels for citrus farming. In 1912, a new dam was built, which is the one pictured here. Today, the region is home to about 5,000 year-round residents, though its population swells to nearly 100,000 during peak tourism seasons.
Big Bear Lake owes its name to the grizzly bears that once populated the area. Following the dam's construction, the region became a hub for resorts, attracting top Hollywood celebrities of the time. This photograph, with its distinctive style and classic aesthetic, transports viewers back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich history and enduring charm of this California treasure.
