Item description
Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence was a British suffragette and activist who fought for women's right to vote in the early twentieth century, finally winning this right in 1928, some nine years after their female counterparts in the United States. Pethick-Lawrence was an inspiration for women in both countries and remains an iconic figure of the British suffragette movement inspired by Americans like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Her work grew more radical during this period when she met Alice Paul in Washington, DC, where this photograph was taken. Pethick-Lawrence was also an advocate for peace and a staunch opponent of World War I.
Alice Paul remains one of the most influential, effective, and inspiring members of the early women's movement and was President of the National Woman's Party for five decades. She believed in peaceful protest and was arrested numerous times throughout her career. She would later inspire future generations and play a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950 and 1960s. Paul played a critical role in guaranteeing equal rights for women under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Paul earned a master's degree in political science, sociology, and economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from the Washington School of Law at American University.
This iconic photograph depicts two luminaries of the early women's rights movement in a period of significant political and cultural transformation. This is an important piece of women's rights history and bears a distinctive style and classic aesthetic.
