Item description
ABOUT THIS BOOK: A Walk on the Sidewalk are true stories and incidents of the Vietnam War as told by the command radiotelephone operator, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry, 25th Division, Bravo Company between November 19th 1968 and November 18th 1969.
What you are about to read is a personal narrative about my on-line experiences of the war in Vietnam. During my twelve-month assignment I served under four different Captains. For three of them I was the Command Radiotelephone Operator. From rest periods to full scale battles, it was my job to communicate all orders given by the Captain and, more importantly, to see to it that they were carried out. While serving I was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal, The Combat Infantry Badge, the Air Medal for Combat Assaults and the Expert Rifle Marksman Badge along with two Over-Seas Bars. In addition, on four separate occasions, I was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device for heroism under fire. I list these awards not to be boastful (to this very day my own family was not even aware of this) but more so to give the reader a better understanding of my qualifications for writing. Unquestionably, far greater soldiers than I performed simple and daily acts of heroism that had gone unacknowledged. Some never even made it back.
All of the stories are true and had been corroborated through a series of interviews with two of my former commanding officers along with many of the members of Bravo Company 1/27th Infantry. In addition I had, when possible, contacted and spoken with the relatives of those killed who I had written about. The purpose of this book was to give the reader a feel and a sampling of what it was truly like for a boy who was just out of his teens to experience the realities of war and to have survived. In addition and during this period of time in my life, I had come to terms with my own identity. For me, the writing of this book became somewhat of a mission. I wanted to take the reader, if only for a moment, into the hearts, minds and souls of the men who stood beside me during battle.
