Item description
ABOUT THIS BOOK: Yosemite National Park contains 1,200 square miles of splendor and, since 1855, when forty-two sightseers began organized tourist travel, more than fifty million people have glimpsed the unrivaled beauty of the incredible Park whose geological his-tory spans millions of years. Yosemite's human history is much briefer, but composed of such legendary figures as John Muir, Galen Clark, James Hutchings, Jennie and David Curry, Steve Mather, Horace Albright and Ansel Adams who were involved in both the development and protection of a scenic masterpiece, a delicate and often controversial balancing act. Yosemite and Its Innkeepers is an absorbing new history of the Park and its predecessor State Grant, as well as its concessionaires ? the men and women who supply visitors with such diverse items as food, beds, shelter, gasoline, horses, fishing bait and shoe-laces. The book's sixteen chapters are coordinated with maps and 163 rare photographs of people, floods, effects of the Great Depression and World Wars I and II. A majority of the pictures (some by Ansel Adams) , have never before been published. It took historian Shirley Sargent more than three years to research and write this comprehensive volume, which includes the year 1974 as well as 1849. To prepare it, she visited a myriad of Yosemite sites and sights, five High Sierra Camps, several major research libraries, and interviewed 125 people who helped shape Park history. Her book is authentic yet lively, and animated by intriguing characters, both good and bad.
