Kojic acid is a cosmetic asset appreciated especially for the skin depigmentation effect, inhibiting the production of melanin. Reduces and blurs age spots, sun, freckles or other unsightly skin pigments. It is used successfully in the case of melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Kojic acid is found especially in certain species of mushrooms native to Japan, it is also a by-product of fermentation of Japanese rice wine.
Kojic acid is successfully used to treat skin hyperpigmentation by blocking the melanin-producing enzyme, when too much melanin develops in certain areas of the skin. Repeated and unprotected exposure to the sun, hormonal changes that occur in the body during pregnancy, inflammation of the skin, all of which can stimulate uneven production of melanin.
In addition to the illuminating effect of the skin, kojic acid is also appreciated as an antioxidant.

About melanin
Melanin synthesis is influenced by external environmental factors and the internal condition of the body.
When the skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation, melanocytes increase their activity, causing the skin to tan. Repeated exposure to the sun can cause melanin to develop in the form of freckles, smaller spots or larger surfaces.
Melanin production can also increase when chronic inflammatory processes occur in the skin, such as in people with acne.
Hormonal changes that occur in the body during pregnancy can also stimulate the production of melanin, resulting in spots on the skin, a phenomenon known as melasma.

Way of ussage:
- usual dosage recommended in cosmetic compositions 0.2-1%;
- In certain formulas, kojic acid is found in higher concentrations (up to 3%) but such applications are recommended only under the guidance of a dermatologist;
- Kojic acid can be added only to preparations containing water: creams, lotions, masks, toners, aqueous serums, cleansers, gels, soaps;
- in the emulsions it is added at the end;
- In the compositions in which kojic acid is included, an addition of 0.5% vitamin E is indicated for stabilizing and ensuring the long term efficiency; in exclusively aqueous compositions, ascobic acid may be added;
- it can be used alongside other assets with the role of depigmentation or skin illumination;
- cosmetic preparations containing 0.8-1% kojic acid, it is indicated to be applied for 1-2 months, then pause for 1-2 months, after which the application can be resumed.
