What a GREAT antique Box. The box has beautiful relief. I guess it could also be a stamp or trinket  box.  So possibly this was a calling card box. Way back then, they had you leave a calling card in a box which is what this also might be. Quite a unique old piece made of gilt brass that was typical to use at the time. This box is very unusual and will be quite a conversation piece. 
This box in average Antique condition for being over almost 100 years. It measures 1/3" tall by 4" long by 1 3/4" wide  wide.
