About the artist:

Joe Kubert (1926 – 2012) is one of the true legends of the comics industry and, as the father of Adam and Andy Kubert, is also the patriarch of one of comics few artistic dynasties. Born in Poland, Kubert emigrated to Brooklyn with his family when he was only two months old. By the age of twelve he was already a cartoonist earning $5 a page. In 1943 he started working at DC Comics and is still, six decades later, active at the art school he founded.

While he is most famous for his war books, especially for his co-creations (with writer Robert Kanigher) of Sgt. Rock of Easy Company and Hans von Hammer (better known as Enemy Ace), Kubert has nevertheless drawn an impressive list of other characters and titles. From illustrating classic super heroes such as Batman, the Flash, Superman and, of course Hawk Man in some of the key titles of the Silver Age such as The Brave & the Bold and Showcase, to his more action/adventure based tales in Tarzan, Challengers of the Unknown, and Tor, Kubert has blazed a trail that that few other artists can equal.

Perhaps his greatest legacy, however, is the Kubert School. Formerly the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, this institution teaches the principles of sequential art, focusing on comics as well commercial illustration. It is the only accredited school devoted entirely to cartooning and boasts an impressive list of alumni that both works in and helps shape the comics industry.

Kubert was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998.
