Firethorn

Latin name: Pyracantha coccinea

Firethorn is a decorative, hardy, evergreen ornamental wood with heavily thorny branches.
Its leaves are ovate or elliptical. Leaf margins are smooth or serrated.
Small, white flowers of the firethorn are arranged in dense panicles. They bloom from late spring to early summer.
Bees and bumblebees appreciate them as a source of food.
The drupes are yellow, orange or fire red, depending on the variety.
They stay on the bush well into winter. Jam can be made from the small, cooked fruits.
