FEATURES:
RICHARD SCHLOSS'S TWILIGHT PAINTINGS by Karen Haber. This California artist likes to paint at dawn and dusk, when the landscape is imbued with the hues of the light striking it.

CREATING ATMOSPHERE WITH BROAD STROKES OF COLOR by Sam Kirby. Massachusetts artist WALKER BUCKNER believes painting is not about subject matter but how an object is described in the abstract language of paint. For him, the most important aspect of a picture is the atmosphere achieved with brushstrokes and color.

THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: SMALL SLICES OF LIFE by Sheila Hansberger. My still lifes range from outdoor scenes of apples and packing crates to indoor ones of ribbons, lace, and everyday items strewn across a patterned surface. They are quick slices of life that suggest someone has been there and will return soon.

TRANSFORMING COMMON OBJECTS by John A. Parks. Unsatisfied with traditional still lifes, George Fischer immerses common objects in a mysterious world of dreams, producing provocative and startling compositions.

WORKING ON FUNDAMENTALS IN SOUTHERN COMFORT by M Stephen Doherty. The artists who joined the magazine's Painting Holidays tour of Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, made dramatic improvements in their mastery of perspective, composition, color mixing, and lighting while enjoying the local architecture, history, and cuisine.

ECHOING CEZANNE by Karen Haber. Californian Pavel Machotka creates landscapes and figure studies that are inspired by Cezanne's sense of form and color.

NUTS & BOLTS: Resources and practical information for artists.
