Description:

“The Horse Thief”, SIGNED Lost Wax Bronze by Frederic Remington – 10.5”!

You are bidding on a SIGNED, bronze sculpture of "The Horse Thief," by Frederic Remington. Remington described “The Horse Thief” as a “nude Indian on a horse holding buffalo skin with right arm as protection…buffalo robe flying in air”. An original model of The Horse Thief by Remington is in the museum collection of Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

It is 100% American bronze. Cast in the traditional "Lost Wax Process" with magnificent patina finishes that are hand-applied highlights that create natural variations in texture and color and then hand-rubbed to bring out the awesome detail and highlights. This ensures that no two statues are exactly alike. The artist’s signature is signed on the bronze base.

This beautiful statue is mounted on a high-quality green marble base. The fine quality bronze sculpture can proudly be passed down from generation to generation. It stands approximately 10.5" tall and measures approximately 10.5” long and 6” wide. This is an exquisite example in very good condition and guaranteed to please the most particular collector or connoisseur. Signed by the artist.

Frederic Sackrider Remington (October 4, 1861 – December 26, 1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor and writer who specialized in depictions of the American Old West. A member of the second generation of Hudson River School artists, Remington is best known for his art depicting the cowboys, soldiers and Native Americans of the Old West. A native of Canton, New York, Remington found inspiration in these subjects from an early age.

His career took off in the mid-1880s when he began making western illustrations for Harper's Weekly and many other widely read New York magazines. Remington's pictures brought visual information to the eastern public accompanying both factual accounts and fiction of the Old West. He was praised and trusted for the accuracy of detail in his work. Many people assumed, and still assume, that he was a westerner, if not, in fact, a soldier or a cowboy himself. In truth, he was an easterner who was as fascinated by the subjects he depicted as his audience was.

He created 22 different subjects in bronze before his death at 48. His worked on increasingly sophisticated artistic goals in his paintings, moving toward impressionism.

About the Production Process:

From the artist's hand to the final polishing stages, many intricate steps go into the creation of a limited-edition bronze sculpture. First the reproduction mold is made in which layers of silicone rubber and plaster are delicately applied to the original work. Then hot wax is poured into the reproduction mold to form an exact replica of the original sculpture.

When the wax replica is removed from the mold, it is then inspected and refined or "chased" by hand to remove any imperfections that may have occurred in the reproduction process. Next, ceramic cup and wax sprues, or gates, are added which later will help channel the molten bronze into the shell to create the sculpture.

The next step is creating the ceramic shell by alternately dipping the wax replica over a period of several days into a vat of liquid slurry, then a vat of silica crystals. The shell is then set to dry, and the process repeats until the shell has reached the appropriate thickness and strength.

The finished shell is placed in a high temperature oven that melts and removes the wax (the traditional "lost wax" method). The hardened or "fired" shell is secured, so the molten bronze can now be poured into the wax impression.

As with any pre-owned and previously displayed piece, anyone looking for additional defects may find them, so we can’t guarantee it is 100% blemish free, but this piece is in wonderful vintage condition!
